Still Life Photography
Still life says what it is... a painting, photograph or drawing of non-moving objects specially chosen and arranged by the artist. The artistic elements of color, texture, light and shadow are usually emphasized in these pieces of art. Subjects might include flowers, books or fruit. Many artists try to tell a story about a person who owns the objects, his culture and times.
For this project, you will be creating a still life that reflects a moment in time in your life. Which moment you choose to reflect is where your artistic vision comes into play; will you portray something about your daily life? Your heritage? The contemporary “popular” culture in which you live?
Will your message be:
- Personal: A personal experience or event that you want to share or capture in an image
- Sociocultural: An occurrence or phenomenon influenced by society (think pop culture) that you want to share in an image
- Ethnocultural: occurrence or reality in which ethnicity (heritage) influences culture practices.
PROJECT CRITERIA:
- Planning sheet: Decide what moment in time you will portray, and what symbols you will use
- Arrange a still life using proper lighting, and a symbolic focal point (the symbol which is the most important) and shoot 20
pictures with varying depths of field. Info on depth of field here
- Print 6 5x7’s: 2 shallow, 2 mid, and 2 wide depth of field. 1 8x10 alternative process (alternative process instructional handout is seperate)
WRITTEN WORK:
- Still Life Report: Look at different still life photographers and then choose one who you like the most. Explain the creative choices made in arranging the still life such as lighting. Write a FIVE paragraph PERSUASIVE art criticism, following the attached format.
