Lighting Terms
Ambient light - illumination occurring naturally in a room or location
Backlight - a light source behind the subject to give depth to the image
C-clamp - device used to attach lighting instruments to stands or grids
Cross-key - to employ two primary light sources on opposite sides of the set
Diffusion device - an instrument used to alter the distribution of light
Dimmer - a control to increase and decrease the amount of light being used
Fill light - secondary light, used to reduce harsh shadows produced by primary lighting
Flood light - a lighting instrument used to cover a large area with intense light
Key - primary light source, used to illuminate the subject
Spot light - an instrument that concentrates a small beam of light on a subject or area
Three point - basic lighting method for all video or photography, to light from three sides
